Calibration and its Importance

What is Calibration?

Calibration is the process of comparing the accuracy of an instrument’s readings to known Standards where traceability is maintained to National or International standards.

As soon as we receive your equipment, it will be cleaned and any case or leads will be checked for safety.

Why is it Important?

Within the Contracting Industry, Calibration is important when issuing Test Certificates to clients (Including BS7671 / 17th Edition, Part P and Portable Appliance Testing results.)

Without Calibration you do not have a recognised method of ensuring that the equipment used during these tests is accurate. You may fail installations or appliances that are perfectly fine or more importantly you may issue a PASS Certificate on an installation that should have been failed and may be dangerous.

I have a Checkbox; Can I not just use this and check my own Instruments?

A Checkbox was never intended to replace the annual calibration check. They are intended to be used to confirm on-going accuracy between the annual calibrations. Most checkboxes only have a very limited number of values that can be used for checking when compared to the list of readings received following calibration by an accredited provider.

By using a Calibration Laboratory you will be sure that every range on your equipment has been comprehensively checked giving complete peace of mind in the results obtained to both your customers and you!

As more and more customers request calibration certificates for equipment being used at their sites, the only real way to prove instrument reading accuracy is to maintain the yearly Calibration. Using the Checkbox will allow you to see any deviation and therefore act accordingly.

Leading test equipment manufacturers including Megger, Fluke & Seaward all recommend annual calibration in a calibration laboratory to ensure ongoing accuracy and verification of their equipment.

What is UKAS?

The United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS) is the sole UK National Accreditation body recognized by the government to assess against internationally agreed standards, organisations that provide certification, testing, inspection & Calibration Services. Acute Sales Limited obtained UKAS recognition in 2008.

What is the difference between UKAS & STROMA Standard Calibration?

UKAS Certificates will be more expensive as they follow specific guidelines which have to be complied with in order to issue a UKAS Certificate. All Certificates issued will bear the UKAS Logo and will be fully traceable back to National Standards; UKAS carefully monitor our laboratory to ensure end to end compliance.

Standard STROMA Certificates are of an extremely high calibre and are traceable back to national standards.

All procedures employed and results reported are in compliance with the international standard - ISO/IEC17025

STROMA offer a convenient and cost effective fixed price repair service. The fixed prices are based on our average price for the repair of various electrical Test and Measurement equipment. At the time of choosing STROMA for your instrument repair, the cost is known, irrespective of the extent of the repair!

By offering a fixed price system, as soon as the equipment arrives it will be awaiting repair as no quotation is needed!

I have an Instrument that needs repairing - How long will this take?

Instruments that require repair are usually returned within 7 days. If spare parts are not available, this may be longer. At all times, we will advise you of any issues. If we are unable to repair the item or it is deemed as being ‘beyond economical repair’, you will be asked whether you wish the Test Equipment to be returned to you.

How long is any repair guaranteed for and what is covered following any repair?

We only offer a warranty on the repair and not the complete piece of equipment. Should the same faulty develop within a period of 3months from the repair date, and it is proven to have been not been caused by improper use, we will undertake a free of charge repair.
